Instructions: Choose ONE of the following three topics:
1. In response to the objection that utilitarianism reduces people to the level of pigs, Mill argues that
there are qualitative distinctions in pleasures. Explain and critically assess Mill’s argument. Be sure to
do all of the following: explain the basic structure of utilitarianism (including how utility relates to
pleasure or happiness); explain the “swine objection”; explain how Mill introduces qualitative
distinctions among pleasures in order to respond to this objection; consider a potential objection to
Mill’s response; consider how Mill might respond to this objection.
2. We have examined several objections to utilitarianism (problems involving maximization;
problems involving demandingness; problems involving the difficulty of utility calculations;
problems involving the experience/reality distinction; etc.). Pick one of these objections. Begin by
explaining the objection; then consider how utilitarians can respond to the object; and, finally,
evaluate the response, explaining whether you take it to be successful or unsuccessful.
3. Explain and critically assess Aristotle’s function argument. Be sure to do all of the following:
explain each step of the argument; explain what the argument seeks to establish; consider an
objection to the argument; consider how Aristotle might respond to the objection.
