The “I BELIEVE” CREATIVE ‘MISSION STATEMENT’ ESSAY 2 pgs. single-spaced.
This is more of a creative essay with an intentionally-repetitious structure that you will notice right away when you read the linked text below. Think of it as a “guide vocal” for your own essay of AT LEAST 10 small paragraphs starting with “I believe…”, and at least 2 pages, with AT LEAST 5 sources CITED — your choice from Myers, music journalism texts, maybe a quote from any chapter in your textbook, OR songs files with quoted lyrics
Always consult: CITING MUSIC MLA STYLE (8th edition)
1) To prep for this different kind of writing sample with a more creative impetus, it’s good to think about what you believe in and cherish in music, especially if you can focus on one artist or band that gives your LIFE (or that you might have even obsessed over). This band or artist must fire your imagination and what it means to human, joyous, in love, and fabulous — and other emotions.
2) Yes, you may use more than one artist or song, in contrast to how the PDF file discusses belief mainly in terms of U2 music and personalities (Bono) for its responses and analyses.
3) Note how Myers (PDF above) works in a source or two smoothly in the middle of his belief diatribe.
4) You will be feeling things in this creative repetition of “I believe”… What do you believe, as an extended mission statement, in relation to the music and artists you love? It’s time to weigh in.
THE CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH:
NOW at the end of your sequence of “I Believe”s — (again, see the file above) — make a final small paragraph statement as to what you believe the best song should be to comment on your life the far. “That is to say, I believe in…………… Which really means, I believe in you.”
REMEMBER that 5 sources can be used and placed strategically. You may use song files and lyrics if analyzed thoroughly to support your point. The other files must come from song lyrics, music journalism files, or other valid sources, preferably peer-reviewed.
