1. Based on what you have read and what you have learned – was the Trans Pacific Partnership a net positive development for the American people? You might want to consider things like employment – but also the fact that 320 million Americans are also consumers who purchase a wide variety of goods from all over the world. Consider the balance between labor standards in Vietnam, environmental protection in Malaysia versus millions of American families being able to put more food on the table due to lower prices. What do we think of these agreements? Are they really “free” trade, or are they more likely giant handouts to special interests? Are there Public Choice economics to consider here? Apply what we have learned throughout the semester.
2. What possible defenses are there to the US Sugar policy? Is this a reasonable program to support working farm families – or is it a giant handout to special interests at the expense of 320 million Americans? There are less than 6,000 sugar farms in the US.(There is a LOT of good information at this link.) How can they keep this program running in this way? What are the economic implications of the US sugar program? Finally, what would you do if you were in charge of Farm Policy like this? What would you tell families, or farmers, or food producers? Again – consider and apply the things we have learned this semester about markets, prices, etc.
