Take a step back to the beginning of the semester and think about our discussion of getting out of your comfort zones and really looking from the outside in. Your continued investment of your 20/20 vision is imperative as we continue to connect these pieces from the author to the piece and to you. Look at “The Elephant in the Village of the Blind” p. 17, “20/20” p. 20, and “A Pair of Tickets” on p. 727. Think first about the Polaroid picture coming into full focus in front of your eyes. Using the characters from these pieces, discuss not only how these pieces connect, but how you connect with the authors and with yourselves.
2. Look at “The Management of Grief” p. 456 and “The Jewelry” p. 722 again and think about how grief touches us all. Compare this to how across our world today, it it is not necessarily the death of a family member, a close friend, or a neighbor, but our news media shows grief each day around our world. Now, we all handle grief differently. How do you connect these two pieces? Remember to use your 20/20 vision.
3. In “The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket” p. 433, how do you connect with this piece and the author? How do the children in this piece see themselves and why do they make the lanterns new each day? Remember, even though many people think they are just ordinary like a grasshopper, we all have a bell cricket in all of us.
4. “A Rose for Emily” p. 692, is about commitment, faithfulness, and class. How does Emily see herself through these themes? Why does she deserve a rose or does she? How might this story be perceived in this day and time? Then think about how true love is perceived in this piece and write a short reaction to this.
5. Take another look at “The Birth-Mark” p. 366. What is beauty and how are imperfections seen throughout this piece with the husband and the wife? I think we all agree that it is hard to define the word, perfect. Think and react to how you see the birth-mark on her face.
6. Look again at the “The Lesson” p. 159. Think about Sylvia and Miss Moore. How does Sylvia react to Miss Moore’s effort to show her students the other side of life? How do you perceive “window shopping” and what is the lesson that Miss Moore is trying to teach her students? Finally, how does Sylvia’s thinking change about Miss Moore by the end of this piece?
7. “The Yellow Wallpaper” p. 585 is full of perceptions about our main character. Remember, she is struggling with Mental Depression. Your task here is to put yourself in her character or the character of the wallpaper. Think about what each sees, hears, and thinks. Don’t forget about the time period which this piece was written. Remember, to think from the outside in.
