A total of three (and only three essays are to be completed). Students should choose one essay per section. Essays should be approximately 250 words. The essays should reflect thoughtful reflection and engagement with the textbooks and the biblical texts.
Section One: Paul (Select One)
– Write an essay on Paul’s world(s). Discuss the Mediterranean culture, Judaism of his day, and the Roman Empire.
– Write an essay on Paul’s resume. Discuss his identity as a Pharisee, his call to be an apostle (his conversion), and his missionary journeys.
Section Two: Paul’s letters (Select One)
– Write an essay on the righteousness (justice) of God in Paul’s thought. Discuss God’s faithfulness to Israel and God’s mercy to the Gentiles.
– Write an essay on the structure of one of the Pauline letters. Delineate the major sections and the subsections of the letter. Provde a rationale for the proposed structure.
Part Three: Contemporary Ministry
– Write an essay that answers the question, “How would you apply what you have learned in this course to your contemporary church situation?” or “What is the message(s) of Pauline literature that is most needed in the contemporary church?”
