To start off I figured there is no better element to pick than hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe (Ken Croswell2022). Its abundance can be contributed to its simplicity. Hydrogen is in group and period one on the periodic table, has atomic number one, and is a nonmetal. It is compromised of only a single proton and electron generally but can exist with various amounts of neutrons. The most common hydrogen atom, totaling roughly 99.98% of hydrogen, exist without a neutron but hydrogen-2 contains a single neutron and is used a non-radioactive label in chemical experiments. Hydrogen-3 contains two neutrons and is radioactive!
Hydrogen’s abundance makes it show up in a multitude of places that life as we know it depends on. The bare necessities for life as we know it starts with energy from the sun, comprised of 73% hydrogen, and liquid water, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. This role as a fundamental building block in life is just one of many examples of how necessary hydrogen is to life as we know it. Hydrogen is the key to DNA bounds creating the double helix shape we associate with DNA as well as the folding of proteins.

Hello Everyone,
After building a couple of atoms within the Atom Builder Challenge, I learned how atoms are categorized on the Periodic Table of Elements, and what information we can glean from this. First, the atomic number is the number of protons in an element, as well as the number of electrons. Also, the protons and electrons need to be equal to create a zero charge, because when an atom is charged it is no longer an atom, but instead is an ion. I also learned that the atomic mass unit (amu) listed underneath the elements’ symbol on the Periodic Table of Elements is the sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom; where each proton and neutron are considered to be one amu. It is fascinating how scientists have taken sub-particles in an atom, and created equations to categorize each atom in an easily understandable way.
An essential element for humans’ survival and well-being that I find interesting is Chromium (Cr). In 1798, the French chemist Nicholas Louis Vauquelin studied Siberian Red Lead. While studying Siberian Red Lead, he was able to dissolve it in acid, precipitate and filter off the lead, and successfully isolated Chromium. The group that this element is found in is six, and the period it is found in is four. So, if you are looking at the Periodic Table of Elements, you can find this element by starting at Hydrogen (H), going four rows down, and five columns over from that. It is a metal, and its’ atomic number is 24, and its’ relative atomic mass is 51.996 (Chromium, 2022). The number of protons it contains, as well as the number of electrons, is 24. While the number of neutrons is 28. Chromium is a trace element that is essential to human life, because it is an essential nutrient required for sugar and fat metabolism. Although, it should not be taken normally (Anderson, 1997).
