Purpose: The purpose of this project is to identify the primary parts of the five books that comprise the Pentateuch or Torah. In addition to indicating how each book should be divided into its major parts, you will tell, in very broad strokes, the story of each book and make application to our own lives today.
For this assignment, you will explain how each of the books of the Torah may be divided and what the primary message of each section is by creating a slide presentation.
In order to complete this assignment, you will need to:
Read Chapters 2-6 in Longman’s book paying special attention to how he divides each book (Genesis-Deuteronomy) into its major sections (usually 2 or 3 parts);
Create a slide presentation that includes:
an introductory slide that includes your name, the title of your presentation, and an appropriate image that conveys the sense of the assignment (something related to the Pentateuch or Torah),
a content slide for each section you identify in each book. (For example, Longman identifies three major sections for the book of Genesis, so you should have a slide for each section or three slides pertaining to the book of Genesis).
So far, you are at 4 total slides: intro + 3 for Genesis. You will + to these 4, one each for the sections in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deut. You will end up with 17 (18 if you count the final section of Deut Longman doesn’t cover) section slides + the intro. That’s 18 or 19 slides total. Don’t make these up! Longman tells you the sections.
You are welcome to create these slides using Powerpoint, KeyNote, or Google Slides. You may craft your slides in the style or format of your choosing, as long as the final product answers the following questions. For clarity, again, each section slide has all three of these answers in it:
What section of Genesis/Exodus/Leviticus/Numbers/Deuteronomy is that slide addressing? (See Longman)
What is the primary message of each section of the book? (See Longman and your interpretation.)
Include a modern-day application to how the primary message of that section relates to today. For instance, “The glory of God in the tabernacle in the final section of Exodus relates to us today because God’s glory lives in the church and in the Christian. Therefore, just as God had purification laws for the tabernacle, so there are ways Christians should live “set apart” from the world today as they tabernacle the presence of God in the world.” Pastorally, this is the most important step, so take it seriously and think about it. One student once wrote reasons to vote for a particular presidential candidate for every slide connected to that section of the OT. That’s not what we’re asking for! Be critical in your thinking and apply healthy means of interpretation.
