Students will choose an organization and will conduct a thorough analysis regarding whether it is a cult, religion, or benign organization. Organizations should be pre-approved by the instructor.
First, you should describe the organization and give as much background about the organization as possible. Then, provide a brief paper (with a minimum of 3 outside references) that discusses, critiques, analyzes, and evaluates whether an organization fits the definition of “cult”.
Your paper must address
Effectively and accurately describe an organization and its practices;
determine (via your educated opinion) whether the organization engages in any of the typical cult recruitment strategies;
meets or does not meet any of criteria contained in the Checklist of Cult Characterizations (see slides/notes);
Engages in practices that meet the criteria for thought reform (see slides/notes).
Your paper will be graded on the depth of your thinking and analysis, how well you incorporate outside references, and whether or not your assumptions/conclusions are valid/logical on each of the three points. The following rubric will be used in grading:
RUBRIC
Turned in on time Yes No (-3 pts)
Use a minimum of 3 outside references Yes No (-3 pts)
Describes organization accurately and effectively _________
Checklist of Cult Characterizations ____________
Criteria for thought reform ________________
The following scale will be used in references to each of the 3 criteria.
0 – Did not answer/missing/absent
1-2 – The effort reflected in the paper is minimal. Student indicates superficial knowledge and understanding of basic concepts. Student basically supplied a list of criteria, with a yes/no response.
3-4 – Greater effort was indicated. Student shows shallow understanding of concepts and real-world applications. The connections to material and episode were mostly obvious; typically in list format with yes/no responses. Some shallow justifications were provided, but were mostly repetitive.
5-6 –Student accurately applies and organizes the concepts, highlighting connections/distinctions between the readings and the organization. Although intermediate in nature, some concepts and justifications were obvious. Concepts were not in list format, but were mostly shallowly justified or addressed.
7- 8– Student was able to evaluate, critique, and support statements using readings, literature, research, etc. Most of the concepts were not obvious or discussed in prior class sessions. Concepts were justified, but sometimes were shallow.
9- 10 – Student was able to accurately and effectively relate materials, readings, literature, and/or research to the organization. Analysis made connections that were not obvious. Concepts and descriptions were deeply justified and not shallow
