Social norms are context-dependent and therefore vary by community.
For example, think of how table manners may differ among families or
cultures. For this activity, use a sociological lens to compare two
norms in two different communities. Consider the different types of
norms, both formal and informal, that may exist in different cultural or
social groups of which you are a part.
In a 2- to 5-minute video, use one or two major concepts and
theories, and appropriate terminology from the text, to explain each
community and each norm. Be sure to (1) apply and explain each concept,
theory, and term applied, (2), describe how each norm would be viewed by
the contrasting community and (3) explain the potential individual and
societal implications of these contrasting views, such as intercultural
relationships or relationships with individuals in different social
classes. You must include visual aids (e.g., you can display a diagram
as you give your explanation), but you are not required to appear in the
video.
