National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect and promotes the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to increase awareness and provide education and support to families through resources and strategies to prevent child abuse and neglect. Each year, the White House and many states issue proclamations to raise awareness and to encourage communities to take steps to improve the well-being of children. This assignment will give you the opportunity to organize and implement a project that raises community awareness about child maltreatment and more importantly, what we can do to prevent it! Each student will have the opportunity to get involved in their community in a way that make sense to them.
This year, MSU Denver and the CCWSC have partnered with Illuminate to promote the 5 protective factors of:
1) Parental Resilience
2) Social Connections
3) Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
4) Concrete Support in Times of Need
5) Social and Emotional Competence of Children
To complete this assignment, do the following:
1) Read more about the five protective factors here:

2) Complete the plan for your family or for a family you know. (Please note that this is most meaningful if you create this plan for someone you care about. However, to protect confidentiality, please change the names or use initials only on the version that you plan to turn in to class.)

3) Then, write a five page (double spaced) reflection paper about the plan. How does this plan promote at least three of the protective factors? Identify which of the protective factors you are targeting in your plan. Support your approach with a discussion that uses at least five scholarly articles. Make sure to cite your work using APA. Reflections that earn full credit will have an introduction, body, and conclusion.
