The Multimodal Presentation is a companion assignment to the Research Paper. The first thing to consider is exactly what “multimodal” is. Here is a definition from the website www.creatingmultimodaltexts.com:
“Multimodal is defined in the Australian Curriculum as the strategic use of ‘two or more communication modes‘ to make meaning, for example image, gesture, music, spoken language, and written language.”
So, basically it means that you will be presenting through multiple modes of communication. For most of us, when we think about “presenting,” we have flashbacks to Effective Speaking classes where we had to stand in front of the class and talk about something for 10 minutes (with the help of notecards and maybe a visual aid). Multimodal is a little different, though. For starters, you’re submitting these presentations online, meaning you can’t just stand up and talk for several minutes. So, you need to be able to present your information and argument through a number of other methods. Consider using images, video, typed words, a game, comics, digital storytelling, etc. You could take your own video footage and edit it with Movie Maker, or build a unique presentations pulling from several other sources.
There are several tools that are useful in creating a multimodal presentation. Here are a few suggestions:
· Prezi (www.prezi.com)
· Microsoft PowerPoint
· Microsoft Movie Maker
· Glogster (www.glogster.com)
· Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/)
These are just a few, but there are tons of options out there! Don’t be afraid to poke around and see what you can find. When in doubt, ask me and I’ll help you figure out if it is the best option.
The Assignment
For your multimodal presentation, you should use the topic and research from your Research Paper. By the time you are ready to create your presentation all of the hard work will be done – you should have you paper written, your argument made, and the research to prove it. From here, you’ll take this information and build a multimodal presentation from it.
Consider all of the tools at your disposal, your topic, and your argument. It’s up to you to decide what the best method of presentation will be. It is also up to you to decide what modes of communication you want to apply. This is a very individualized process. As always, feel free to discuss ideas on the Weekly Discussion Boards, or to email me individually with questions.
Requirements
· The presentation should have a run time of 10-15 minutes. Take into consideration the content you are using – how long will it take to watch individual videos, read through text, or interact with a game? If you are doing a full original video, take this into consideration as you edit.
· The topic should be the same as your research paper – essentially, you’ll be taking the work you’ve already done on the research paper and creating a presentation based on that information.
· The format of your presentation will determine how you will submit it on Blackboard. Whenever possible, upload your presentation directly in a file (as in PowerPoint, for example; Prezi will also allow you to download and save your finished presentation as a file), otherwise you are likely able to share a link within the dialog box of the drop box. When in doubt, ask me and we’ll figure it out together – just do so with ample time before the assignment is due!
