You will have to write on what might explain how two governments in Particular might have interacted in ways that resulted in the end of the Cold War or the change in travel across the iron curtain between countries etc…You get to choose but just make sure that it is related to the rise or fall of the Berlin Wall. You should keep the focus on the international relations here between different governments for a better fit with our theories. You will have to explain which one of International Relations theory best explains your scenario. Instructions are down below, let me know if you have any question and also what you choose to do.
Introduction
a. Presents your research question, case, and argument (i.e. which theory best explains your case). You should note not only which theory you’ll be using to try to explain this case (e.g. neorealism, neoliberalism, constructivism), but (briefly) why it’s best suited to explaining your case.
b. Provides a road map for your essay (1 paragraph)
2. BRIEF background on your case
a. Provide a brief background of your case (only what is absolutely necessary to understand the research question).
b. Explain why the theory/theoretical frame you’ve selected is fair to apply to this case (couple sentences)
3. Analysis of the theory you’re using to apply to the case (e.g.neorealism, neoliberalism, constructivism)
a. What are the key component parts of this theory?
This is an essential component of this paper. Show that you understand this theory and what to look for to know if this theory can explain a given outcome in your case. You should also mention who are the adherents of this theory (which scholars use this theoretical framework? Cite relevant work).
b. What should you look for to know if this theory can explain your specific research question for this case? What would your theory expect to see to answer your specific RQ?
4. Applying the theory to your case/RQ
a. This is where your investigative research on your case will come into play. Hold up the empirics of your specific case to the key components and expectations of the theory (which you discussed in 3a and 3b) and see if they are useful/accurate/valid or not for explaining your research question in this particular case. If the theory assumes you will see X, look for it in your case. Do you see evidence of X? If not, acknowledge this and discuss it as a potential weakness in the theory (you should be able to address weaknesses together at the end of the paper). This section requires that you both UNDERSTAND the component parts of the theory and CAN PROVIDE EVIDENCE from your empirics where the theory does (or does not) fit the specifics of your case. You will apply this evidence from secondary and primary sources. Your evidence should be credible and logical. You need to be able to weave your evidence with the theoretical claims. You need to cite all your sources properly.
5. In the end, why was this theory the best one to explain your specific RQ/case?
a. Consider alternative arguments here and engage them (for example, at least briefly address how another theory might have answered your question, but why your chosen theory is a better fit)
6. Suggest amendments/improvements for the theoretical framework
a. In this section highlight the weaknesses of the theoretical framework you argue is best able to explain your case. No theory fits perfectly with reality. Highlight some of the weaknesses of the theory that are exposed in attempting to explain your case and, importantly, suggest improvements to the theory such that it will be better able to explain similar cases in the future.
