Research Project Overview
*PLEASE HIGHLIGHT or UNDERLINE your essay’s thesis in your final project before turning this in.
As part of the final requirements for English 102, you will need to develop an extensive research paper, no less than 2500 words in length, on one major topic that considers and employs original research from at least 10 different quality sources. This topic should be derived from your interest in a major, field of study, debate, dilemma, event, phenomena, issue, problem, quandary, or otherwise researchable and argument-worthy idea. Your topic selection is open, but subject to my approval. Ultimately, you want to use this as a time to explore something related to an area of expertise you may need to engage in again in the future because of a future professional or career choice or personal advocacy or lifestyle choice.
For this project, your goals are to identify and research a viable topic to eventually argue a point pertinent to that topic. To develop the information literacy and research skills necessary for success in this course and in your future college courses, you will be following several steps and employing a number of strategies in this project. Your goals are to explore and incorporate various research angles and appropriate sources — in addition to reading and writing skills – for developing your topic and validating your eventual thesis. The process is designed to encourage original ideas and cultivate genuine and authentic research connections.
The culminating project will be a final, formal research paper, no less than 2500 words in length, prepared in proper MLA format and documentation another appropriate system. This system should be chosen dependent on the discipline or subject matter of the project. Like your proposal, you will need to include an annotated bibliography with both Works Cited and Works Consulted. This essay will employ significant source work to support an original thesis argument, and should demonstrate a balanced and knowledgeable understanding of the available research. Minimum Project Requirements
PRIOR to the final essay project you must receive approval for your TOPIC choice and complete the Research Project Proposal (WA4) successfully and in a timely manner.
Complete ALL required posts related to the project development. Participate in peer reviews and conferences as required.
Complete Research Paper (successfully!)
2500 words minimum (aim for 2500-3000 to ensure success!)
MLA Style Format and Documentation OR other Approved Style
Multiple (at least 10) Incorporated Sources
Complete ALL Research Project components
Participate in all Correspondence, Workshops, Evaluations, and Conferences
You MUST pass the final essay with a C or better to pass English 102.

*Please note: I am available at any time during your writing process –EVEN IN THIS UNUSUAL TIME . While we will have a few “class discussions” about this project (videos, discussion boards, and other formats), individual issues may be addressed to me individually, as well. However, please recognize that in order to be successful with this project, you will need to stay on-task and take advantage of every opportunity for help, including reading course documents, working with classmates, visiting the Tutoring and Learning Center, and utilizing the JJC Library resources, especially the very helpful librarians!
