After the 9/11 attack on the world trade centre in New York City, President George W. Bush made a famous announcement to the world: “you are either with us or against us”. Bush went to war in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places based on a vision that there were two kinds of people in the world: “Us” and “them”, the civilized versus the Jihadis. From our vantage point of 2018 we can identify many consequences of the subsequent Global War on Terror, least of all the rise of ISIS in territories destabilised by US-led interventions. The UK has recently experienced numerous terrorist attacks claiming inspiration from or affiliation to ISIS, and the rest of Europe has suffered many more. But was it and is it so simple to understand global terrorism in terms of “us” vs “them”? Famous Palestinian-American literary critic, Edward Said, didn’t think so. You’ll read his criticism of Bush. After all, there were Muslims who were working in the world trade centre when it was attacked. And ISIS have killed far, far more Muslims than they have Christians. Moreover, as you’ll see with Olivier Roy’s essay, what drives people to commit terrorism might be more counter-intuitive than we think.
