Essay Question #1: You viewed a video of David Taggert, who was suffering from mentally illness, and lived in the streets/commuter stations of New York City. (Video is on the Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders page in Canvas; Discovering Psychology: Psychopathology (Links to an external site.); the section on David Taggert is near the end of the episode, around 20:00).
Part A: Based on your observations from the video, describe how David’s behaviors were consistent with a DSM-5 diagnosis of a schizophrenia. (To do this, you should present the symptoms used to diagnose schizophrenia, and then clearly describe specific behaviors David Taggert exhibited which are consistent with these criteria.)
Part B: David Taggert adamantly refused to take antipsychotic medication, so he did not receive public services that he might have been able to qualify for if he had agreed to take medication (e.g. housing, psychiatric and medical care, social services). Do you think David should have been required to take antipsychotic medication to receive these basic services? Provide at least one argument from each side on whether David should have been required to take medication (or not) in order to receive these basic services. Based on material already assigned in the course, provide reasons for each perspective,

Using some examples presented in the Frontline program, present at least two factors influencing the rise of psychiatric diagnoses and increases in prescribing medication for children. Discuss BOTH the advantages and disadvantages of the increasing diagnoses and medication of children for psychiatric disorders.
