*Must have access to Christine Barbour and Gerald C. Wright’s: Keeping the Republic-Power and Citizenship in American Politics 10th Edition*
Write a four-paragraph essay in which you evaluate how well the American political process meets these conditions, drawing on the following key concepts and terms from chapters 15, 11, and 14, as well as chapter 13 (review) of Barbour & Wright’s textbook:
Chapter 15: How well does media coverage provide Americans with the political information needed to choose the best leaders and to hold them accountable? Include: the importance of a free press to democracy, commercial bias, horse-race journalism, and news management in your explanation.
Chapter 11: How accurate are scientific polls in cueing officials to the common good as the public itself understands it? Are officials in general appropriately responsive to public opinion – how so or how not? How do informational shortcuts allow the American public as a group to come closer to the ideal of a democratic citizenry that can hold its officials accountable than do many Americans as individuals? Include: sampling error, non-response bias, sample weighting, rational ignorance, and opinion leaders in your explanation.
Chapter 14: How effective are American elections in selecting the type of officials called for in Federalist No. 57 and in holding them accountable for their actions in office? Address both voter participation rates (i.e., are US voter turnout rates high enough to accomplish these goals?) and how voters decide. Include: political efficacy, prospective and retrospective voting, swing voters, and policy congruence (from the section “Do elections make a difference?”) in your explanation.
Chapter 13 (review): How does public participation in politics through joining interest groups contribute to the selection of good leaders and to holding them accountable? Include: the roles of interest groups in a democracy, collective action problem, the revolving door, and grassroots versus astroturf lobbying in your explanation.
Remember to organize the module summary essay around a central thesis statement. For this essay, the thesis must state your answer to the central question: How well does the American political process meet the conditions prescribed in Federalist No. 57? State the thesis at the beginning of the essay, not just at the end, and be sure to expressly connect each chapter’s material to it.
