You may only write about texts from the second half of our course—from the Decameron onward. You may not use any secondary sources; the essay should be you closely analyzing and in dialogue with the literature, not book-report-Wikipedia-factoids. If you do not follow these guidelines, you’ll earn a zero on the essay. If you do not submit 5 full pages, meeting the base-level requirement, then you will earn a zero. Revist our reading schedule and choose one literary text that we’ve read from the Decameron onward that made you feel uncomfortable—intellectually or emotionally—a text that challenged you but then, after thinking about, writing and discussing the text (in any context), you came to find to be valuable, important, enjoying and/engaging. Next, write an essay where you explain why your chosen text made you uncomfortable and why you did not understand/appreciate/enjoy the text until after thinking and writing about and/or discussing it with others (in whatever form—our class discussions or with the people in your life). What are the benefits of being challenged and made to feel uncomfortable as a reader? Be sure to share the ways in which you “discussed” the text and how discussing and/or writing about the text illuminated it for you. Do not write a summary or a book report but instead an essay with a specific thesis/main argument. What was valuable gaining from text that made uncomfortable.
