The first three pages will be over the article here is the link (http://genocidewatch.net/genocide-2/8-stages-of-genocide/). YOU WILL NEED TO READ THIS SHORT ARTICLE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION BELOW:
(3PAGES)
2. Considering the new environment provided by social media, livestreaming, and other technologies, is Stanton’s language in need of revision? You will want to particularly consider his Stages 4, 5, and 6. Suggest some new or modified language– where you think it is appropriate– What does broadcasting mean today? If the spreading of hate speech is a stage of genocide, in what formats or settings do we need to look out for the hate speech today?

The fourth page is extra credit. It must be started on a new paper. Here are instructions for the extra credit:
The extra credit is over the PDF that is up in the Week Fifteen Materials page in Canvas: Heide Fehrenbach and Davide Rodogno, “ ‘A Horrific Photo of a Drowned Syrian Child’: Humanitarian Photography and NGO Media Strategies in Historical Perspective,” International Review of the Red Cross 97, no. 900 (2015): 1121-1155. Since this is the only permitted source for the extra credit, you do not need to worry with a works cited page or any fancy citation—if you have direct quotations from the article, you can put the page number in parentheses after the quotation, like this. (1133) As with other assignments in this course, use direct quotations sparingly, to highlight a concept or a special piece of evidence—turning in extensive excerpts from the article proves your typing skills or your cutting and pasting skills, but nothing more than that.
In your extra credit essay, I will want to see evidence that you read, spent time with, and understood the entire article. For example, the article begins with a discussion of the photo of Kurdi, but most of the article isn’t about that photo. What purpose does the deep dive into the history of photography and photojournalism serve? Fehrenbach and Rodogno observe that successful humanitarian photographs “visually represent children in ways that show they are worth saving and deserving of aid.” (1137) Discuss how the article develops that thesis, making sure to discuss how the terms/concepts ethnocentrism, sentimentality [sentimentalization], patriarchal protections, the Holocaust (in the specific context of humanitarian consciousness-raising) and civilian-as-child are used in the article. Does the article draw a distinction between a successful humanitarian photograph in the sense of one that succeeds in circulating widely, and a successful humanitarian photograph in the sense of a photograph that really motivates people to take action and change the situation?
I HAVE ADDED THE READING FOR THE EXTRA CREDIT, DOWN BELOW. ALL OF THE READING FOR BOTH ARE LISTED IN THE INSTRUCTIONS OR IN THE UPLOAD FILES SECTION.
