Imagine that you are four weeks from graduating with your B.S. degree and pressure is building to find a job or decide if you want to go to graduate school.
Write an essay about why kind of permanent employment you’re interested in; why you want to go to graduate school; or if you already know you want to study for a PhD, what National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates sites you might be interested in. Pick choice A) or B) or C) below.
A) If you’re interested in finding permanent employment, briefly describe the type of job you’re looking for as your first job out of school. Make one up if you are undecided. If you are a graduating senior and have a job lined up already, briefly describe that job. Think about what’s important to you — location, size of company, opportunity for professional development, opportunity for advancement, etc. Then search the web for a job that fits your requirements, that is currently advertised, and you would meet all the requirements at graduation time. If you already have an offer, describe it more here.
OR
B) If you’re interested in graduate school, describe why you’re interested. Do you want an MS or PhD? Describe any relevant research experience you’ve had as an undergraduate. What are some universities you’re interested in? What are some possible funding sources and fellowships you might pursue? From whom will you request letters of reference? What advice will you take away from the Graduate School Panel on November 4?
OR
C) If you already know you want to study for a PhD, investigate Research Experiences for Undergraduates programs. These are situated at various universities throughout the country and are typically used as a recruiting tool for students to get to know the host institution and hopefully apply there for graduate school. To turn in: List two REU sites that have research programs that interest you and explain why. Just write one paragraph for each of the two sites.
