This term we have learned about family configurations that may differ from an idealized nuclear family form from the 1950s and 60s. This family form is thought to consist of a married, heterosexual, cisgender mother and father, and their 2 biologically-related children. Family forms that differ from this idealized model are sometimes considered to be divergent and therefore contribute to negative child outcomes. But, does research support this assumption? For this article review assignment, you will consider what implications have been found in social science research about child outcomes for children being raised by adoptive or older parents, and in interracial/multiracial families, LGBT families, or nontraditional families.
Answer the following questions based on this article:
1. Define “Standard North American Family” (SNAF) and describe how been idealized. Define “alternative family forms,” and describe how they have been characterized compared with SNAF been characterized. (For example, how might alternative family forms be described positively or negatively compared to SNAF?)
2. For each of the family forms listed below, (a) describe how this family form differs from the SNAF, and (b) list the potential advantages and disadvantages that exist for child outcomes in each family form, according to the authors:
Older “parent” families
Adoptive families
Same-sex families
Multiracial families
3. In the conclusion, the authors state “research on alternative family forms challenges a deficit model of family structure in which deviation from a two-, relatively young, biological, heterosexual, monoracial parent family carries costs for children” (p. 314).
For each of the family forms (older “parents,” adoptive, same-sex, parents, multiracial), identify and explain one family strength that could also be identified in each of the family forms in the previous question, and how that strength could be applied to enhance outcomes for SNAF families. (Consider, for example, what is going well for older “parent” families that could be examples, of practices that SNAF families could also employ.)
