Assignment: Final Essay / The Giver & Newbery Acceptance Speech
Preparation: To complete the final essay for this course, you must be familiar with the story The Giver. You can read it or watch it and you will be fine. You must also read Lois Lowry’s Newbery Acceptance speech in order to complete this assignment.
Overview: A tributary is a stream that flows into a larger stream of other body of water; in her 1994 Newbery acceptance speech, Lois Lowry explained some of the memories or tributaries that inspired the novel The Giver. How did memories affect and influence Jonas in the story? What kind of memory affected him most? What did memory enable t him to do? How do our individual and collective memories shape who are today and influence our future(s)? How has this book, and/or the acceptance speech, changed how you think about yourself and your future? This essay invites you to consider these topics and the story, both in general and, more specifically, in relation to your own life and thoughts (hence the personal reflection focus discussed below).
Task: Write a 3 – 5 page essay discussing the tributaries in your own life that impacted how you interpret the conclusion of The Giver. If you believe Jonas and Gabriel died at the end, or if you believe they have successfully arrived in Elsewhere, or if you believe in heaven, or any other interpretation that you may have, explain what lead you to believe this and how that impacts your understanding of the story, as well as what that may suggest about you. Consider the questions in the overview section above and discuss what meaning this story has for you, considering also the idea of memory.
Please be sure to read the Newbery Award speech that Lois Lowry gave in 1994 when she won the award for The Giver. You can find the speech here: https://www.walden.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Newbery_Award.pdf
This is a relatively open assignment. I am looking for a few key things here:
Personal reflection
Evidence of thoughtful analysis of the story
Use of at least two quotes from the novel or film, and
At least two quotes from the acceptance speech
A conclusion that ties this all together
An essay that is at least 3 full, double-spaced pages. More is fine, but less is not.
