Content:
-You will write a paper proposing the application of a positive psychological
theory/construct/intervention to improve the lives of people or institutions. Examples
include positive psychological interventions to psychotherapy, families, schools,
workplaces, religious institutions, etc.
-Types of driving forces – how can you attempt to use positive psychological
theories/constructs/interventions to improve a type of diagnosis (e.g., depression),
address a public concern (e.g., substance use on college campuses), or improve
institutions (e.g., workplaces).
-Critically look at and discuss the topics, then look for research that shows whether or not mindfulness has been shown to help and
how. (No proving whether it helps or not is necessary).
-Example theory research question: How can I use research on
process/activity theories of happiness to improve the lives of the
terminally ill?
-About half of your paper should be devoted to reviewing theories and research on your
positive psychological theory/construct/intervention and the remaining half of your paper
will be devoted the application of this positive psychological
theory/construct/intervention to your area of interest.
Formatting Guidelines:
-Page limit is no more 7 pages, but no less than 5 pages, excluding cover page, abstract,
and references,
-Double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font
-Provide cover page, abstract, and references.
-Minimum of 8 references.
-References should be peer-reviewed academic articles, books, etc. No
Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, etc. (Hint: if it ends in “.com” it is most likely
not scholarly).
-You can use non-scholarly sources to supplement the writing, but I still
want 8 academic references.
-Introduction and conclusion paragraphs at beginning and end
~3-4 pages on theory/construct and past research
~3-4 pages on the application of that theory/construct to the population you chose
-Paper should be written and formatted in APA 7th edition style
-Includes citations and reference list
-Subsections when needed***
-Examples of subsections: Intro/Lit. Review, Application/Intervention,
Discussion/Conclusion
-Do not use slang or contractions (e.g., “do not” instead of “don’t”)
-Avoid using anecdotes or personal experiences as supporting arguments (e.g., this
incident happened to me…).
-Avoid personal applications (e.g., I’m writing this paper to figure out how
positive psychology can enhance my relationship with my mother) – the
application component of the paper should relate to groups of people, processes,
or institutions (e.g., psychotherapy, families, schools, workplaces, religious
institutions, etc.).
-Start new paragraphs when starting new ideas.
-Use topic sentences to begin each paragraph.
-General guideline – if a paragraph is a page or more long, it most likely needs to
be broken up into multiple paragraphs.
-It is important to be specific about the positive psychological constructs/theories
that you’re addressing in the paper (e.g., gratitude, optimism, mindfulness, flow,
etc.).
-In terms of content, the paper should have an appropriate balance between
theories, research and applications (refer to the instructions in the syllabus for
details).
-Be careful not to neglect a review of relevant empirical research studies (the
instructions require you to cite at least 4 peer-reviewed empirical studies). For
example, if your focus is on the effects of expressing gratitude on couples’
relationships, you should be aware that there are empirical studies on this exact
topic and these studies should be cited and described in your paper addressing
topics such as the populations and outcomes observed in the studies.
-You are expected to conduct original library research (e.g., using Google Scholar,
PsycInfo, etc.) and not just rely exclusively on the references provided in the textbook.
