Summary of Literature Review
A literature review, when it is a stand-alone text, is a particular type of research paper; a literature review is a large-scale review
of a topic where an author summarizes or reviews a pertinent and substantial portion of past research, findings, literature, facts,
and/or opinions on a specific topic. In general, a lit review is mostly summary or paraphrase; however, through the summary
and exploration of a given topic, the author of the lit review crafts their own argument about the topic, and/or comes to their
own conclusion about it—generally, what is needed for future research, what gaps in the research mean about past conclusions
and findings, and/or what other researchers need to consider in continuing to research the selected topic.
What You Need to Do—Guidelines
(1) You will write a literature review on a selected indigenous community (either one chosen or one assigned to you)—
developed from a collection of 12 different resources (at minimum)—these 12 resources need to be allocated into a
Literature Review Tracking Document, and turned in on 9 May 2022—the tracking document will be graded on a
standard A-F scale and will be worth 15 grade points overall; there are no extensions on the tracking document
(2) In general, your lit review should cover a breadth of topics related to the community you’re researching, including, but
not limited to: 1) community/tribe traditions, general practices, spiritual beliefs and practices, region of inhabitance,
existence pre-contact (that is, general scope of life before contact with European colonizers), existence post-contact
(that is, what happened to the tribe generally after contact with European colonizers), the state of the tribe today (that
is, what still remains: language, traditions, lands, etc.)
(3) Your literature review will need to use the classic “lit review elements”: 1) road maps and sign posts for your audience;
2) paraphrase, direct quotes, varied in-text citations; 3) call-to-arms statement/direction for the future; 4) section headers
(4) You will also need to craft clear, organized “themes” of research within your paper—recall the “age”, “gender”, and
“disciplines researched” sections from the “Differences in Student Cheating” lit review we analyzed for and discussed
in one of our class sessions
