Format for the Laboratory Report for Unknowns
The laboratory report is to be a complete record of the work that you did during the unknowns
assignment. It is to EXACTLY follow the format listed below. This is a standardized format used
for formal laboratory reports. It is to be typed. The length will vary depending on the exact steps
that each student had to take to identify their two organisms. There should be a title page with
your name, the letter of your unknown, and the semester included with your report. You must use
the headings with the Roman numerals, section name, and they should be “justified left” meaning
they should be as shown, on the left-hand side of the page. You may turn this in to be graded as
a rough draft the first time. After you have made the corrections and are turning in the final draft,
you must include the corrected rough draft in the packet.
I. Introduction
The introduction is to be a short paragraph discussing the importance of
identifying unknown organisms. Double-space this section.
II. Materials and Methods
The materials section is a complete LIST of the items you used. It should include all
equipment, supplies and media used. These lists should be single-spaced.
The methods section should list every experimental method that you used during the
unknowns. It would include the methods for culturing, colony and cell morphologies,
staining, gaseous requirements, enzymatic tests, etc. If the method used was performed
exactly as in the lab exercises, you may just list the method and reference the exercise
from which it came. If there were any modifications to the technique, those modifications
must be indicated. If we used a different method, it should be written out in step by step
form. You should reference the exercise that the method came from here, and then put
the list in Section VI. References as well. NOTE: You would typically need to write out
each procedure step by step in this section, but we are allowing a short-cut.
III. Results
The results should be reported in table form and should include everything
you discovered about the organisms. It would include colony morphology, oxygen
requirement, stain results and cell morphology, selective and differential media and the
results for all enzymatic tests. This section should be single spaced so that the ENTIRE
table is on ONE page. Do not split the table to two pages!
IV. Discussion
THIS SECTION MUST BE DOUBLE-SPACED!
The discussion section is the part where you tell exactly what you did each day, why you
did it, how you did it, what the results were, and how the results led you to the next step.
It is inappropriate to use personal pronouns in a formal laboratory report.
Ex. On the first day of the unknowns exercise, tube number ___ was chosen and
was streaked for isolation on two TSA plates. One of the plates was incubated
aerobically and the other was incubated anaerobically, both at 37o C for 48 hours.
Aseptic technique was used for all procedures during the unknowns exercise. All
incubations were
at 37o C.
V. Conclusion
The conclusion should be a closing paragraph that includes a restating of the identity of
your two organisms. This section should be double-spaced.
