Directions
Create a case study based based on a specific event from the book you selected. Your case study does not need to be as long as the one below but should be at least 400 words (excluding a brief bibliography) and based on the template below. This case study will help you build creative and critical thinking.
Process
The process for writing a case study is in a different order than how the end product appears. You begin by thoroughly understanding the outcome–what actually happened—and work back from there. You should write the major sections of your case study in the following order, although they will appear in a different order in the paper:
1.) Start by summarizing the outcome of the event. In other words, what actually happened? Be sure that you clearly understand the decision that your selected person made and the historical outcome. Here you need to include a citation from your book. You can begin to search the web and other sources for other perspectives on what happened and why. What aspects of this event do other sources agree on? What aspects of this event do other sources disagree with?
2. ) After you identify the decision that was made and you understand it (this is covered in the outcome section), compare it with other decisions could have been made. What were the possible consequences for each of those decisions? This is the problem section and the heart of the study. Here you are exercising historical thinking to examine and imagine answered questions about the past. The best way to do this is to use if-then statements. Identify the decisions with a number and the corresponding outcomes with a letter. Here you also need to include corresponding citations from your book.
3. ) Next, you should write about the context for the event. What major developments were taking place that framed your actor’s decision? Then explore the problem. What options did the situation present this person? Instead of thinking in a binary—either/or—think of three decisions that could have been made by your selected person based on the context you provided.
4. ) Next, think about the relevance of this particular historical case study to a course question and other issues raised in the course. How does the study of history help us outside of the classroom or influence how we think about the world? Specifically, how does this particular historical event relate to course questions or your course project? Does this particular case have any relevance to your career path? Does it help us to better understand a contemporary event in the news or an issue in the local community?
5. ) The judgment section is the part you should write last. What have historians and others said about the decision that was made? Equally important, what decision would you have made if given the chance and why?
6.) Finally, go back and add hyperlinks to important terms to appropriate web sources that provide greater clarity and to your study. Create a bibliography of these links that includes the book that you based this study on.
