Write a persuasive and researched argument in which you try to change someone’s mind
about a given topic. You want to get your audience to agree with you that there is a problem
and that the problem related to your issue is severe. This argument needs to relate in some
way to one of the casebook, debate, or reading discussions that we have had (or will have) in
our class. Considering what we have discussed as a class and conducting your own
research (using academic and scholarly sources), you will want to identify a problem, form a
position on the problem (make a claim/take a stance), and provide a logical, well-reasoned,
and well-supported argument proving the problem associated with one of the issues. See
possible topics/ideas below.
Your paper should be 5-7 pages, with an additional Works Cited page, and you should have
a minimum of four scholarly sources (not from your textbook). Even though I will not limit
the number of electronic sources you may use, please do not use more than one website. All
other electronic sources should be from academic journals and periodicals made available in
online databases. All electronic sources must be documented and verified for credibility.
In upcoming weeks, you will share your topic/issue and your thesis statement with me (and
maybe with the class).
NOTE: This assignment is not a formal policy proposal, so you need not provide a possible
solution (save that for your Program Proposal paper). Therefore, your essay is not calling
your audience to action; in other words, you don’t want to use words that convey what your
audience should or should not do. The following is an example of an inappropriate thesis
statement for an essay proving that there is a problem: Marijuana should be legalized
because of its medicinal properties. Instead, you want to prove that there is a problem that
needs acknowledging and that it needs acknowledging now (give the problem presence). An
effective thesis statement proving that there is a problem would be more like the following:
The US government today infringes on the rights and free will of individual citizens, which
adversely affects American society
