For this essay, you need to pick a real world problem (it can be big or small, but should be something meaningful) and come up with a radical or ridiculous solution for fixing it. You must research the problem and the underlying reasons associated with it and present a clear summary of the problem and implications of not fixing it to give me a complete understanding of the problem. Next, you need to clearly explain your solution for fixing it. Finally, and this is the hard part, you need to persuade me that your solution will work!
When I say “radical or ridiculous” I mean that I REALLY want you to think about a crazy solution. It would probably be very easy for you to convince me that all child molesters should be given life in prison. That does not really give you a lot of work to do for your paper. I want you to think of a solution that most people would never agree to – something completely off the wall (for instance, comedian George Carlin suggests that to keep down prison over-population, the government should take Texas and put up a very large electric fence – all prisoners should be put inside the fence and given weapons; then they should be left to fend for themselves). Of course, you do not have to actually believe what you are proposing, but you need to be able to find a way to persuade me to take your proposal into consideration. You need to use your reasoning and language skills to make even a crazy proposal sound tempting. Mostly, I want you to have fun with this assignment! Go crazy and use your imagination! Please use critical thinking skills to come up with something new. For example, one previous student suggested building a car that ran on human methane gas to solve the problem of high gas prices. The following subjects are off the table for the research paper because they have been over done: Global Warming (giant fans in space are boring!) or Any type of televised gladiatorial events to solve murder, gangs or illegal immigration, obesity.
