Throughout the semester, we have taken a deep dive into how music has been used to provide context to the advancement of social movements. We spoke about how jazz was born of the struggle of a black South after the American Civil War. We spoke about how messaging in music supported the causes of the Civil Rights Era and Third Wave Feminism. We realized how music lent its sound to amplify voices in protest music and freedom songs.

The crux of all of this comes down to advocacy. As we have seen throughout this course, popular music is shaped by messages of advocacy and progress. This includes messages of fairness, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
For your final assignment, you are asked to dig deeper into this concept and speak to the concept of advocacy. In this final paper, you are asked to research the history of a marginalized community and provide a musical history of how popular music is used to advocate for them.
A successful paper will have the following:
A brief written history/abstract regarding the marginalized community and the issues surrounding their community. Communities can be defined by, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, economic status, veteran status, etc. You must be specific in how you define your selected community (i.e. – African Americans, members of the LGBTQ+ community, physically disabled, etc.). 1-3 pages
Define the community 4-6 pages
Explain the struggle – chronologically and historically
Discuss any legal, legislative, social, or political action surrounding the community
A musical timeline that parallels key moments in the community’s history. Include any notable songs that were emblematic in demonstrating the history, or served as pivotal moments in the community’s history.
Include specific examples of songs
Mention any lyrical passages that support the example
If a music video supports the example, provide a link to the video, and speak to the imagery.
Personal Narrative/Conclusion 1 page
Speak to why you chose this community
Where do you see advocacy for this community moving forward?
How important was music for this community and why do you think music is important in telling a society’s story?
