Discussion Board 8
How Trashy Are You?
For this week, we are going to
something a little different.
Step One: Get a trash bag that is clean.
I would like for you to place any and all items that you would throw away for
the day in this bag. If you typically recycle something, then please do not
include this and instead put this item in a recycle bin, as it is has not
finished its life cycle.
Step Two: After you have collected all
your trash for the day, I would like for you to weigh how much trash you would
have thrown away that day. (Hint: this can be accomplished by stepping on a
scale and weighing yourself (i.e. 170 pounds). Then, pick up the bag and weigh
again holding the bag (i.e. 171.2). Subtract the weight with the bag from your
weight. This will give you how much trash you collected during the day (i.e.
171-170 = 1.2 pounds of trash).)
Step Three: Take the total number of pounds
and multiply this by 365 days. (i.e. 1.2 x 365 = 438 pounds of trash for just
you.)
Step Four: (worth 10 points)
Write up your result in
an online post and answer the following:
How many pounds of trash did you collect
in one day?
How many pounds of trash would this be in
one year? Ten years?
Were you surprised by this number?
What could you do to reduce this number?
How many people are in your family? How
much trash is this for just one family?
Step 5: PLEASE respond to at
least 2 other students’ posts (worth 5 points)
