You are responsible
for organizing a new school in a racially/ethnically diverse, working class and poor
neighborhood with a large immigrant population, where resources are not an issue. What are your ideas and how would you proceed? This is meant to be both a broad and
specific question for you to showcase a range of course content- show what you know.
In other words, you may have an overarching approach or idea about the school’s
philosophy to teaching and learning but also have some specifics about implementation
or programs. Try to move between broader conceptual framing to implementation or
practice.
Best practices about the school should be based on empirical data and findings
predominantly from LDH’s Flat World and Education, although you might also be guided
by other course readings.
DO NOT use outside readings. Paraphrase ideas by giving
author and page number or chapter but DO NOT use direct quotes. Show me that you
understand, summarize and can apply LDH’s best practices.
Please organize your 7-8 page essay by addressing 5 categories below indicating each
topic in your essay. For each category below state an overarching approach as a title
explained in the first paragraph before you move on to specifics. In other words, be sure
to define your overarching approach, so that you are not presenting disconnected ideas
or best practices.
It is not necessary to answer every question listed below the topic but you should
address each topic. The questions are meant to guide your thoughts and suggest areas
you might include but they should by no means limit your ideas. Your design for the
school is however limited by the ideas in Flat World or other course readings, so make
sure that your best practices are based in social science research.
Please write about 5 categories in total. 3 are assigned: philosophy/vision, faculty and
teaching/learning. The next 2 are your choice from the options below.
REQUIRED
1. Philosophy: What is the overall philosophical approach to the school? What will
it provide and do for students? What are the key values and concerns? What is
the approach to the community, community partners and teaching and learning?
Who will you invite to be part of the process of creating a new school?
2. Faculty: What skills and training do you require? Who would you recruit and
why? Are there special skills you want faculty to have? If so, what are the skills?
Discuss faculty career trajectories, ongoing training, pay, etc. What would an
ideal candidate look like?
3. Organizational Structure: How would you organize all aspects of this school?
How are students’ experiences organized in the classroom, during the day and
throughout the semester? What is the design of the classroom, building and
yearly schedule? What are you ideas about planning time for faculty or students
outside of classroom?

4. Curriculum: How will you develop the curriculum? Who’s responsible for it and
what would your overall approach be? What kinds of knowledge is relevant? Who
is responsible for planning lessons, writing curriculum and when does it happen?
What is the overall approach to content?
5. Campus Design: Given the opportunity to design your own building and choose
the location, what would you create? Explain the principal design features and
how they connect to the overall vision/philosophy. Where would you locate the
school? What kinds of spaces would you create? What is the relationship of the
school building to the city/town and to the physical environment. How would
classroom spaces be organized. What other kinds of spaces would you include in
the design and why?
6. Assessment: Will you have assessment? If so, what kinds of assessment
(format)? how frequently? Who designs the assessment and how do students
receive feedback? What is the purpose of the assessment?
