Remember these four goals of Rogerian argument and note how they differ from traditional argument:
1. Through neutral, dispassionate language, reduces hostility and lets the readers know they have been understood.
2. Show how readers’ positions are valid in certain contexts and under certain conditions.
3. Show readers that they share values, experiences, attitudes, or perceptions with the writer.
4. Propose solutions that combine elements from both sides so the reader will be more likely to agree with the author.
Use the structure to guide you:
1. Objectively introduce the issue. Provide the WHO, WHERE, and WHAT. In the final sentence, give the opposing position’s thesis. (1 para.)
2. Provide the hostile audience’s evidence and reasoning. You must integrate research in each paragraph. (2 paras.)
3. Summarize and validate: Show the conditions and contexts when the opposing position is valid. Write a clear transition from the opposing position to your position. (1 small para.)
4. Give your position. Use evidence and reasoning.Integrate research in each paragraph (2 paras.)
5. Provide common ground. (1 para.)
6. Reconcile the two positions. Provide tentative solutions to create new ideas that might introduce the spirit of negotiation between the two positions. (1 para.)
