RESPOND TO THIS CLASS MATE OF MINE PLEASE.
Caitlin Pruziner
In 2020, I was working at a Nursing home for Veterans. When Covid hit our facility, it hit us hard. I worked on a dementia unit where majority of the residents were ambulatory, so it was very difficult to isolate the patients. Their were no visitors allowed at this time so the staff were there not only to care for and treat the patients, but also to console them. Many of the residents had lived there for years, so we had become like family to them. In a short manner of time, most of the residents on the unit were testing positive and rapidly declining. We lost about half of our residents during that time. It was during this time that I felt I had displayed compassion to the veterans who had already experienced so much hardship in life. I was there for them during there last days on earth, when their families were not allowed in. I also displayed compassion towards the families and gave them a sense of comfort to let them know that their husbands, brothers, fathers, and grandfathers were cared for, loved, and were not alone when they passed. Going through this experience with my coworkers gave us a closer bond and made me respect them more for working so hard as a team to keep our residents comfortable. “The art of nursing embraces dynamic processes that affect the human person, including, for example, spirituality, healing, empathy, mutual respect, and compassion” (ANA, p. 23). As nurses, we give so much to our patients. It is important to remember that we also need compassion, empathy, and time for ourselves. Someone once said, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.”
After that experience, I realized the importance of self-care and self-compassion. I began going to therapy after that traumatic experience and it was one of the best decisions I made. My therapist provided me with emotional support and a safe place to express myself.
Nurse burnout is a widely discussed topic. A survey done by the ANA showed that the short term and long term effects of stress and being overworked were the top 2 safety and health concerns among nurses (Magtibay et al., 2017). Not only does burnout affect the nurse, it also affects the patient’s outcome, satisfaction, and safety (Magtibay et al., 2017). Hospital systems are aware of nurse burnout, yet they do very little the counteract it. Between hospital-wide staffing crises, unsafe patient to staff ratios, pressure from management, increase needs of patients, and no time for meal breaks, it is hard not to feel burnt out after 3 12-hour shifts. If the hospital system is not helping, it is important for nurses to focus on self care. Movement and meditation have been found to be great ways to reduce stress and help as healthy coping mechanisms (Magtibay et al., 2017).
The iCARE assessment has showed me that even though I am aware of the burnout and ways to mitigate it, I also need to take more time out to focus on my well-being.
