How does the story of Kao Kalia Yang and her family, both in Southeast Asia & Minnesota, reflect important changes in American history since the 1960s? Your response should address foreign policy, immigration patterns and changing ideas about race and ethnicity. You must also support your argument with specific examples from the memoir, and incorporate other primary sources, as well as information from lectures, to provide historical context for the challenges the Yang family face. (Look to Weeks 7, 9-10, & 13-14 for information for your response)
Using information from lectures and from the assigned readings, (i.e. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES OR RESEARCH!) craft an overarching argument that answers the question and defend it using specific evidence.
Your response should address the question specifically and your argument should clearly articulate HOW and WHY that is the case.
Use The Latehomecomer as the primary source of evidence, while also incorporating concrete evidence from a number of different assigned materials (i.e. lecture & documents from Major Problems); properly cite sources for attribution. The citations should include the author’s last name and the page number from the source. For example: (Yang, 124). For sources from Major Problems, cite the author who actually wrote the piece. For example, (Sugrue, Major Problems, 153). To cite something from lecture, write (Lecture, [Week & Lecture #])
The evidence you use for your essay should come from the book: The Latehomecomer, lectures, and course readings/viewings. DO NOT use outside material.
Sources that you NEED to use (you don’t have to use them all, but these are the only sources that you are allowed to use)
