Debate how we should focus more on the labor movement more than women’s suffrage in 1913.
This is a formal, written composition – 1100 words in length, Time
Roman font, 12 point. With this assignment, you build and improve on your Debate Contribution, i.e., you unfold a more in-depth, expanded argument as to why your cause should be the central one in 1913. You will include a solid sense of at least one major counterargument to your position and you will answer this objection with areasoned response based on the evidence. Other rules for the road:
• Draw on the readings assigned to you for your team (especially primary sources).
• Use parenthetical page citation. Cite the page number for the Historical Overview
and the last name of the author and page number for the primary sources.
• No bibliography necessary.
• Apply rules from these materials: Principles of Citation Part 1; Source Analysis,
Counterargument, and Thesis; and Basic Grammar, Punctuation, & Syntax.
• Include a brief introduction/thesis and conclusion and developed paragraphs that
build your case “step-by-step.”
• Your speech should make abundantly clear that you engaged your readings
deeply and that you learned about your opposing team’s counterarguments from
the debate.
• Use your imagination! What would it be like to stand on a soapbox and make
such a speech to a large assembly of curious onlookers in 1913? While
respecting the evidence and staying within the bounds of logic and reason, how
would you grab their attention, sway them with vivid examples, and convey the
power of your convictions?

Speech Contribution (1100 words; 11 points)
1.5 points – Parenthetical citations – follow guidelines & citation principles (a poorly cited speech, in which inaccuracies and/or inconsistencies abound, receives a zero and violates the
academic honesty code)
2 points – Answers the question directly with logical, reasonable use of evidence and an insightful argument
1.5 points – Applies rules in Basics of Grammar, Punctuation, & Syntax (minus 1 full point for issues with dropped in/hanging quotations, run-ons, fragments, comma slices, or clunky prose)
2 points – Draws substantively on the assigned secondary source (Historical Background)
2 points – Draws substantively on at least four of the assigned primary source materials
1 point – Comprehension of major counterargument(s) from the Debate (goes well beyond the obvious), including key supporting evidence
1 point – Compelling answer to counterargument(s)
Dont rely too much on paraphrasing and quotes. This is your paper/speech. don’t use outside sources . This is not yet a research paper.
