Essay #4, The Persuasive Essay
Due: August 2
INSTRUCTIONS: For this last major course essay, you may choose your own topic. Choose a subject you are very passionate about—spay-neuter pets, Medicare for All, stricter immigration, easier access to voting, gun control, infrastructure, abortion rights, etc. Then, choose what aspect of that topic you would like “to argue” in your essay. Create a persuasive essay with a thesis (with a clear point) and support that with at least three pieces of evidence.
1. Write a three-page essay (7-10 paragraphs, with at least 5 sentences in each paragraph).
2. Make sure each paragraph has a good topic sentence.
3. Be sure to include transition words.
4. Be careful to avoid “bias” in your essay.
5. Consider stating the opposing viewpoint in a paragraph, and give what some of the opposition’s arguments might be. Then, in the following paragraph(s) show how your point is stronger.
6. If your argument has limits, acknowledge them.
7. You‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌r audience for this paper is your fellow classmates (college-level readers)
8. Be aware of your style and tone in your writing. (Avoid using “I” or “you.”). Keep your writing formal.
9. Create an interesting introduction of your topic to the reader. Grab their attention!
10. Avoid making a statement that can’t be supported by evidence (examples, facts, etc.)
11. Be sure to explain all your supporting examples with clear and strong details.
12. End with a concluding paragraph that summarizes your key points and backs up your thesis statement.
13. As always, use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Aim for no comma errors and no sentence fragments!
14. Vary the length of your sentences. Have some short sentences, some compound sentences, etc.
15. Use a variety of sentences (how they begin, the sentence structure, etc.)
16. Look over the grammar and punctuation rules we have covered so far this semester, and use those skills in this essay!
17. Give yourself plenty of time to proofread before‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ the assignment is due!
