S‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌poiler Alert: This assignment contains spoilers about chapters 17–26 of Jane Eyre. Please read chapters 17–26 before reading through the prompt and assignment instructions.
Morality and integrity can seem very “black and white” at times: it is wrong to steal. It is wrong to kill. However, a discussion of morality becomes much more difficult when examining individual situations. For example, in Les Miserables, the masterpiece by Victor Hugo, the main character Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread because his sister’s children are starving to death and he has no other means to provide food for them.
In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is forced to kill Tea Cake when he is mad and threatens to kill her. Once you begin examining individual situations, general black and white statements become more difficult.
In Jane Eyre, Jane is faced with an impossible situation. Mr. Rochester is married to Bertha, but Bertha is insane to the point of violence and self-harm. Divorce was not an option at that time for Mr. Rochester, and so marriage to Jane was also not an option.
Jane is faced with an impossibly difficult decision: Should she leave the man she loves and stay true to herself and her integrity or should she stay with him and betray her values? Jane decides to leave him and to stay true to herself. How do you feel about her decision?
Janie was also f‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌aced with a moral dilemma. She felt trapped in an unhappy marriage to Logan Killack. When Jody came along, she decided to leave her husband and marry Jody. Janie also believed this decision was a way to stay true to herself. How do you feel about her decision?
In an argumentative essay, examine the difficulties of these moral decisions. Examine each character’s decision regarding the possibility of marrying and argue whether or not the decision was, in your opinion, the moral decision.
Remember that this is an argumentative essay, not a persuasive essay. You must also address the counterarguments to your positions.
Include the following in your essay:
Introductory paragraph that introduces the topic of your essay and a thesis statement which addresses the morality of Jane and Janie’s decisions.
Address each character’s decision separately. Describe the decision, the factors that lead to the character’s decision, and whether or not you believe it was “moral” or “right.”
Address the counterargument to each character’s decision. Why would someone disagree with the decision? Why would someone believe that the opposite decision would have been “moral” or “right”?
Describe a moral dilemma you have faced. What did you decide? How did your decision enable you to be “true” to yourself?
Include a conclusion that restates your thesis an‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌d ties everything in your essay together.
