My topic of interest: colorectal cancer
(targeted at the elderly: population with high incidence, choose 1 primary article + 3~4 review papers/other sources for background information)
PROPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS:
A. Choose a topic and paper that interests you, then complete Section B (below):
1. Find a primary paper published between 2019-2022 in ANY journal as long as it relates to some aspect of health and/or disease. The paper chosen should not be a case report nor a meta-analysis.
2. The topic can be on any area related to material covered in class OR from your own interest (but should not have been a paper covered in a different course at all – this is a form of academic dishonesty)
3. You will be creating a 5-7 minute information style video that targets a specific population (i.e. age group, social class, or other) focused on this paper.
B.Guidelines for the 1-page initial proposal 10% (these are only guidelines – please be creative!!)
1. The main purpose of this proposal is to provide background information and statistics/context for the health topic that you will be covering in your future video assignment. You can include visuals to help express your content (i.e. this does not have to be a written review).
2. The information should be targetted to a particular audience, and presented in a way that supports understanding by that group (e.g. very simply for kids). At the top of your assignment, include which group you are targeting, and a brief rationale for your choice.
3. You are graded on how well you have presented the background information on your health topic to your target audience, as well as a short section on what new information (treatment, new knowledge etc.) your paper provides. The information can be visual, written, or a combination of both as long as it gets your points across)
4. Please research your disease or health related condition. Use Canadian sources where possible, since this should be relevant to students and the public in Canada (e.g. find reputable sources related to cancer rates in Canada). Make sure to cite the sources of your information. You will include the webpages you used as information sources on the final infographic. You can also use supporting information from review papers or other sources Sources should be cited using Cell or Nature format.
5. Note – you do not have to create original artwork if you are not inclined to do so, however, if you are using figures or artwork obtained online, the URL or source should be clearly indicated somewhere on the document. You may re-use figures from the article you have chosen but please indicate the source of all figures used (or cite your own original artwork). The source of the figures should be clearly outlined in Cell or Nature format below the figure text.
6.One suggestion– Biorender.com is a free program that is useful for creating biological graphics- you have been provided with some samples of previous year’s assignments as well. The free version of Canva at canva.com also has artwork that can be used. You should indicate the program used to create any graphics.
7. Suggested key information for full marks: overview of the health topic, impact (how prevalent etc.), what is known about the health topic (e.g. disease mechanism), potential treatments/approaches, the relevance of your paper to this topic, sources cited, original visuals, citation of images.
8.Your proposal/infographic should be submitted as a PDF file. I would suggest creating the proposal/infographic using Microsoft Word/Powerpoint or Google slides first to organize the ideas, then add graphics either created using free programs, or from other sources.
Note that your proposal does not need to be an infographic (like a poster using Biorender). It can be written, visual, or both.
