In your opening sentence, please mention the title, author (if there are one or two
authors, you should mention both. If there are three or more authors, you can just
mention the first author and then use the abbreviation “et al” which means “all the rest

article. Why was the study done? What were the aims of the study? Were the aims
clear? (10 points)
2. Was the study original? Did the study add to the body of knowledge already available on
the subject? (5 points)
3. Mention the study design. What design was it? Was the study design appropriate? Why
or why not? (i.e. do you agree with the study design the authors chose, or do you think
they should have used a different design)? Explain. (5 points)
4. Who was studied? Describe the population, inclusion and exclusion criteria and sample
size. Make sure to describe these criteria for both groups (assuming there are two or
more such as exposed/unexposed or case/control) (10 points).
5. Describe how the exposure and outcome variables were measured and described. Were
they continuous or categorical? If categorical, were they dichotomous? Was the
authors’ description sufficient? (10 points)
6. Explain if the data collection methods were appropriate. Were the investigators able to
get complete data, or did they have to exclude relevant data? Were assessments
blinded? (if relevant) (5 points)
7. Were there any ethical issues associated with the study (such as selection of subjects,
exposure, etc). If so, how were these issues addressed? (5 points)
8. Were the statistical approaches described and appropriate? Justify your response.
Include how systematic bias was avoided or minimized, including any confounding. (10
points)
9. Were the results reported in adequate detail? Explain and give at least one example in
your response (5 points)
10. Were the results appropriate for the methods described? For example, describe what
measures of association the authors used in their results (such as risk ratio, odds ratio)
was this measure appropriate for the study design? (5 points)
11. Were the authors’ conclusions justified and supported by the results? (10 points)
12. Did the discussion put the results in context? (5 points)
13. Did the authors address any criteria that could support a causal relationship between
the exposure and the outcome? (5 points)
14. Did the authors include potential public health implications of the study? What
additional studies or policies did they suggest? What is an additional study or policy you
