This is a broad assignment which deliberately allows you to look at areas of interest to you around child protection. Select a child/family and apply different theories and concepts to them and the professionals role within this case study.
• Introduction stating what the assignment will be about and what areas will be explored. Also note that it will be from a health visiting or school nursing perspective (200 words).
• Critical debate around the concept of safeguarding e.g. risk assessment; stigma; labelling ; Stereotypes; Normative assessment by Professionals; Inequalities ; Individual lived perspective etc. Emic and Etic. Power; Socially constructed; predetermined codes; intersectionality .Link to HV or SN (500) This is a general debate exploring why it is complex (pick one or two points and show the dilemmas of child protection) and touch upon the various types of abuse but don’t describe them.
• Select a family from practice to discuss and highlight the key areas for concern e.g. neglect; sexual abuse etc. NMC. Make it anon (200).
This part will be mainly descriptive.
• Role and responsibilities of your profession. HV or SN implications and be critical of the profession (draw upon the key principles if you want ) e.g. influencing policy. Policy drivers around this subject be CRITICAL ie this i​‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌​s advanced practice stuff with advanced skills (500)
• What are the effects on the child and family of abuse. Again show that reading rather than the google e.g. show the links to self-harm or mental illness (300)
• Literature review of the evidence around the topic .What are the theories /risk assessment of child abuse- debate the issues relating to the family you have selected eg family dysfunctional theory or attachment disorder theory or intergenerational theory etc. Pick 2 or 3 (800 words)
• Collaborative working be CRITICAL. The policy will always recommend close working relationships but…show the reality. Also think about collaborative working often misses out the family (300)
• Conclusion summarising the assignment key points and making some grand statement eg child abuse is booming in the UK and we need to be proactive rather than the current knee jerk approach which we currently have (200)
• Reference list showing your wider reading ( or at least the pretence of wider reading)
REFER TO ATTACHMENTS SURROUNDING THE FOLLOWING PLEASE
The safeguarding one is fine and on track but obviously needs tidying up. Don’t lose sight of the child and family and be more critical of professionals and HV eg lack of professional curiosity; Befuddlement theory; Start again syndrome ( lets forget about the past)
