Week 2 – Discussion Forum 1 Responses
Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates by commenting on their posts. In your response, provide your own interpretation of their distribution graph. Note any differences between your classmate’s interpretation and your own. Though two replies are the basic expectation for class discussions, for deeper engagement and learning you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you. Continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with the discussion topics.
NEED RESPONSE FOR THE DISCUSSION BELOW
Class,
Post the URL and the distribution graph from the website.
The variable that I chose for this discussion this week is Building Permits Authorizations for New Single Family Homes. The graph shows the difference between Florida and Georgia.
https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/interactive/bps-new-privately-owned-housing-unit-authorizations.html (Links to an external site.)
Discuss who you believe generated the data. Do you think it is credible?
The data that is generated for this variable is based on reports that are submitted by local building permit officials in response to a voluntary mail survey (census.gov, 2022). I personally do not think that the information provided cannot be as accurate as the Census Bureau want them to be. The Census Bureau sends out Form C-404 to the local officials to complete and send back to get the data. Even though the data may be missing some actual numbers, I still think the graph is useful and credible. If the numbers were fully reported, the amount totals will be a little more but the overall look of the graph with maintaining similar visualizations. Both states and their line will look very similar.
Discuss what the graph reveals about the variable.
The graph is showing that in Florida there is tens of thousands more housing authorization than they do in Georgia.
Explain any unusual aspects, as well as the shape, center, and spread of the distribution. Discuss your own interpretation of the distribution.
The 2020 and 2021 data from Florida shows an uptick in authorizations to build new homes in the state at a rate that Georgia puts out in one year. Georgia’s data has been steadily on the rise while Florida is rapidly growing. I do believe that the number of housing authorizations has happened due to the pandemic where people from other states decided to move to the warm climate state. I am not sure why Georgia was not a hot destination because the state had similar responses to the pandemic.

BUS 625 Week 2 Discussion Forum 1: Interpretation of Quantitative Peer Feedback
Hello Professor and class,
For this discussion I chose the quantitative variable of age. Specifically, the percentage of the black population age 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree or higher. The chart was retrieved from the URL: https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/2022/comm/black-education.html (Links to an external site.)
United States Census Bureau, 2022
Discuss who you believe generated the data. Do you think it is credible?
The graph is a time series visualization starting from 1940 and progressing to 2020. The information is received through the United States Census which is collected every 10 years (apart from 1959). I believe the information to be credible from the surveys collected; however, it is important to note that the census survey is a controversial one in many urban centers and areas with larger areas of minorities where distrust may drive non-participation. According to Ax (2022), “The census has overcounted white people while undercounting people of color for decades, but those trends accelerated during the 2020 census, the report showed.” The source also states that this information was captured from the U.S. Census Bureau who relied on statistical analyses to arrive at this conclusion and further posits that the count for black people had a net undercount of greater than 3% in 2020. (Ax, 2020)
Discuss what the graph reveals about the variable/ Discuss your own interpretation of the distribution.
The graph clearly shows the rise in the percentage of black people 25 years and older achieving higher education incrementally as reported from the US. Census. It further breaks out the variable by sex and one data point is titled “black alone total”. This is an average of the 2 sexes and while I cannot recall the genders available on the survey, I would want to understand if the census has begun to capture non-binary gender identities. Certainly, this would not be captured throughout the entire time series, but this group should be represented especially as we see a rise in those identifying as other than the two traditional genders. In terms of interpreting the timed aspects of the graph, it is interesting that male and female are equally increasing over time until the time between 2000 and 2010, where the growth for the male data point slows down and the female data point continues a steep rise, thereby creating the gap seen in the 2020 Census of 30.5 female to 24.7 male which represents a range of 5.8. According to Sharpe, De Veaux, & Velleman (2019), a measure of the spread is called the range which is the difference between the two extremes. Range = max – min. In this example of spread we are measuring the spread of the 2020 data as opposed to the spread of the data across the entire time series due to a lack of discreet data points. It would be interesting to have this data represent the ages 20-25 as well. Higher education degrees are achieved at younger ages today. Conversations organized around equity have come to the forefront in the US since 2020, making this data interesting and necessary knowing the goal of equitable opportunity desired for people of color in the US.
Explain any unusual aspects, as well as the shape, center, and spread of the distribution.
The shape of this line graph is skewed to the left. As stated above, the spread of the distribution is hard to gather because there are only 3 measurable data points on the graph. The data would need to be available through distinct callouts or an accompanying data table to determine spread by creating a histogram.
