This paper is an analysis of the connections between language and nationalism. It is a research paper and serves as the synthesis of the numerous topics covered throughout the semester. You need to identify, describe, and analyze an example of how language plays a role in nationalism and nationalistic identity. (You cannot select Spain, Turkey, or Israel because they were analyzed in the textbook.) This paper will potentially (and most probably) connect with multiple topics from the course including: language standard, dialects, social groups, social norms, religion, gender, ethnicity. Some ideas to help you in researching your paper:
Examine the links between language, ethnicity and nationalism
What language-related news and events have occurred in the country?
What is the history of the language(s) and that country?
How did that language (or languages) become the official language(s)?
How has language been explicitly connected to identity?
What are the languages of surrounding countries and how does it affect the language (if applicable)?
Are there other languages present within the country? If so, what conflicts or issues have arisen?
How is the language enforced and perpetuated in the society?
Are there language academies, language councils, etc. and how do they affect the language status in the country?
Are there notable dialectal distinctions?
Are there ways that gender is connected to language usage and norms?
Are there connection is there between religion, nationalism and language?
Remember- Include specific examples to support your description and analysis.
