Draw on THREE of the following theorists/theoretical traditions: (1)DuBois; (2)Mead/Simmel; (3)Gilman; (4)Fanon/Said; or (5)Collins/Davis. Answer the following questions for the three theorists/traditions you choose:
How do aspects of society external to the individual, such as social structures and institutions, place, empire, etc., shape one’s sense of self and the development of human potential? How do these aspects afford some people more advantage and others more disadvantage in relation to this theme?
A strong essay will draw on the text and lectures to define important concepts and analyze the topics. To analyze you should do more than summarize what the authors wrote. You should evaluate and critically examine the readings to show how what they wrote relates to the essay question. A clear answer for both questions then is not just a regurgitation of the readings or lecture material. It connects aspects of the texts to the assigned question.
This paper must be at least 4 double-spaced pages with normal fonts and margins. Use of in-text citations is mandatory. Use only course readings, lectures/discussions, and material on ELMS as you write the paper.
Grading will be based in: 1.) Precise understanding of the material; 2.) Strong analysis of the material in relation to the questions; 3.) Use of necessary citations when appropriate; 4.) A well-written paper with a strong thesis and general coherence throughout.
