READING REPORT: CASH AND FRIEDMAN ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
The ability to easily synthesize published literature is imperative in the helping professions. This
assignment will give you the opportunity to engage with the course textbooks on PTSD by
concisely, yet thoroughly, summarizing the material. You will also be able to identify how the
material relates to your personal and/or professional journey by discussing the influence of the
material on your own goals.
INSTRUCTIONS
This assignment should cover any five chapters of your choosing from the Cash and/or Friedman
required texts and be written in the following format:
– Summary: Please list what 5 chapters you are covering in the report. Then, write a no-
nonsense summary that identifies the key themes (much like the summary on the back
cover of a book). Please make sure you cite the author in this section since you are
summarizing the material. There is no specific length requirement for this section.
However, a concise, yet thorough, summary is usually 1-2 pages.
– Application: How does the information in this book influence how you are going to
continue your own personal growth process? How could you apply the concepts of what
you read to your future career? What actions or changes are you going to make in your
life and your (current or future) work as a result of your learning? Be precise in
summarizing concrete action steps. This section should be at least 250 words.
– Critical Thinking Questions: Critical thinking involves asking questions about
clarification of key issues, worldview assumptions, reasons/evidence, and implications of
materials. Please generate 5 questions based on what you read and/or questions you have
about how the material applies to your area of study/interest. You may simply list the
questions in the reading report.
An example of a good critical thinking question is as follows: The Friedman (2015) text
suggests on page 3 that even infants can be traumatized, using the example of a fictional
character who watched his parents murdered as a very young child. What would trauma
look like in an individual who was too young to remember the traumatic event? How
would this impact the developmental process?
This assignment should be written in either current APA or Turabian format. It should be double-
spaced and include both a title page and a references/bibliography page. The only required
resource(s) is/are the book(s) being reviewed.
Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
