The Process
The Midterm take-home exam will cover the different time periods we have discussed from the beginning of the semester to the week that the exam is due. You will be required to respond to various questions with short one-page responses for each exam, utilizing the course materials in each response. The questions and sources will be added within two weeks of the exam due date.
Logistics and Required Elements
You will need to respond to 4 short responses from the Question list.
Each question will need to include approximately one-page responses (double spaced) that show understanding of broader concepts and periods of time, as well as the ability to analyze sources and make arguments about historical events.
The exam is open book and you are required to include evidence from our course textbook in each essay. You will also need to cite the textbook at the end of the exam.
Upload either a Microsoft Word document or PDF file to this assignment folder in Canvas. This assignment is worth 15% your final grade in HIS 1030.
Midterm Exam Questions:
Outline three major innovations, and their long-term impacts, in western Civilization from the period of the first city-states to the period of drought that ended numerous dynasties around 1200 BCE.
What were the major factors that led to the rise of the first complex societies (city-states) in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley?
What were the developments and innovations that made Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Harrapan civilization societies unique? (Give at least two for each society)
Compare and contrast the Persian Empire and the Assyrian Empire and describe the factors that led each to maintain a powerful empire, and decline.
Describe the development of the Silk Road. What were some of the different ways in which it connected Afro-Eurasia together and led to new technologies and innovations?
Outline the development of micro societies in the Americas from their earliest settlements to the development of larger societies, such as the Chavin and Olmec peoples. What are some of the innovations and developments of these societies? Use specific examples.
Compare and Contrast the development of philosophy in China, South Asia and Greece in the first millennium BCE? Who were some of the major thinkers and how were their ideas impacted by the world around them?
Outline the development of the Greek Polis using specific examples of Greek city-states and the governments that they developed between 750 and 500 BCE.
