Individual Ethical Case Analysis (ECA) Write-Up Instructions
The Individual Ethical Case Analysis (ECA) Write-ups are due by the specified due date
(see Course Schedule for specific due dates):
a. Each student will write and submit one Individual Ethical Case Analyses (ECA). Note that
this is an individual assignment, not a team written assignment. Individual ECAs typically
range between 10 to 12 pages (excluding the cover page), double spaced, Times New
Roman 12 pt. font, 1” margins throughout. NOTE: Use headings to create the separate
sections for the steps listed below. For each section, the recommended number of pages is
specified; however, these are intended to serve as guidelines, rather than a rigid page limit.
b. For the case analysis, put yourself in the role of the Decision Maker (i.e., the person who
faces an ethical dilemma and trying to decide “the right thing to do”). As the decision maker,
do the following:
1. Identify the relevant facts (1 page).
2. Identify the pertinent ethical issue(s) and points of ethical conflict (1/4 page).
NOTE 1: Phrase each ethical issue as a question that captures the ethical
dilemma faced by the decision maker (e.g., “Is it morally right (or wrong) to do X,
given Y?”)
3. Identify the relevant affected parties (1/2 page).
4. Identify the possible consequences of the issue(s) for each of the parties
specified in Step 3 (2 pages).
5. Identify your relevant obligations as a decision maker for each of the parties
specified in Step 3 (2 pages).
6. Identify the relevant moral community with the highest ethical standards that
should guide you as a leader of integrity (1 page).
7. Identify a course of action that you consider to be “morally right”, using:
i) one consequentialist ethical framework (either egoism or
utilitarianism; apply the Standard Implicit for the chosen
consequentialist framework and consider the consequences
identified in Step 4 above to reach an ethical conclusion about
what is “morally right”);
ii) one deontological ethical framework (Kant’s ethics, Rawls
theory of justice, prima facie, or moral rights; apply the Standard
Implicit for the chosen deontological framework and consider the
obligations identified in Step 5 above to reach an ethical
conclusion about what is “morally right”), and
iii) virtue ethics (apply the Standard Implicit of the virtue ethics
framework and consider the relevant virtues of a leader who
aspires to be authentic to reach an ethical conclusion about what
is “morally right”).
v) NOTE 2: If different ethical frameworks lead to differing
conclusions regarding the “right thing to do”, pick the framework
and course of action you think is most appropriate and explain
why.
vi) NOTE 3: Section 7 will typically be 2-3 pages in length.
8. Check your gut; explain why or why not your “gut reaction” is consistent with
the recommended action(s) identified in Step 7 (1/2 to 1 page).
9. Actions; In an effort to be transparent, offer one or more alternatives that the
decision maker acting as an authentic leader could propose that would respond
to the situation in order to address the conflict presented by the issue(s) (moral
dilemma) you identified in Step 2. Be creative!!! (1/2 to 1 page)
c. Submit your Individual ECA through the Assignments Tool in Blackboard. Please convert
your document to a PDF file before submission.
