The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King, JR. was a response to a 1963 letter titled “A Call for Unity,” which was written by eight white clergymen and published in a local newspaper. The eight writers urged King’s demonstrators to cease their forceful civil actions and instead use the court systems to fight for their rights. Read both arguments.
Writing Assignment: Compare and contrast both arguments. Who do you feel presents a better argument? Why? What issues are we dealing with today? Are they still the same or different?
Must be a minimum of 600 words; indent paragraphs, and double space. Your thesis sentence should include your position on the issue, and you must underline it. Do not use such phrases as “I think, I feel, I believe.” Do not use 2nd person pronouns (you, your, yourself), and do not use contractions (can’t, don’t, haven’t, hasn’t). You may document references to your sources by paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and synthesizing. I am requiring that you use sources from both arguments for this particular assignment to help prove your position on the issue. See MLA style of documentation from the Resource list above.
