Good Evening future investors,
For over two decades, Ben-Gay, a producer of rubbing creams for sore muscles, has been trying to unveil their own aspirin line. The pain management company already saw this as a fantastic opportunity to introduce their product line to a new market. Unfortunately, despite being on the market for less than two years, this product in no way, shape, or form succeeded in achieving this objective. Because customers had traditionally associated ben-gay with a strong menthol odor detectable from miles away, this product eventually became a big failure. Customers could not bring themselves to buy the new aspirin because they believed that it would have similar taste to that of rubbing ointment when taking it.
Had they wanted the new product to succeed, they would have used rebranding. If the product was to be relaunched under a different brand name, the ‘burning sensation’ and ‘strong scent’ tag would disappear, because it would no longer be associated to the Ben-Gay cream (Pauley, 2019). I applaud the company that they introduced Ben-Gay Aspirin while attempting to come up with a logical extension. Well, while Jalees & Tariq (n.d.) think that it was a good decision, they are afraid that the company’s strong association to the burning cream keeps it in big trouble. The product was bound to fail because no one would ever like the imagination of swallowing a Ben-Gay product.
Therefore, for those of you who want to start up a pharmaceutical store, they can use a different brand, one that would target people experiencing frequent migraines and headache. This would completely erase the cream tag linked to Ben-Gay. Any time customers see the brand, they should think of Aspirin, but not the cream.
My question to the reader is can you think of a product that in the past has had to have a rebranding of its own and was it a successful outcome?
