This is a self-reflective essay where you reflect on your gender identity. In this reflective
essay you are trying to bring out your understanding of how your gender identity is
socially constructed. In other words, you are trying to take a social-constructionist (and
a critical cultural) perspective to analyze your identity. While you would be reflecting on
your gender identity and how they are socially constructed, you need to give specific
examples from your life (scenarios/contexts) and describe communication processes
associated with the development of your gender identity. You will also bring
intersectionality into your essay by addressing the how you are influenced by your
gender identity and atleast one other identity (for example your race/ethnicity) using
an inter-sectional approach.
◦ Specific prompts that you have to answer are provided in the next slide.
◦ The essay should be 3-5 pages long. Double Spaced. Font: Time New Roman 12.
◦ The assignment should be submitted on Canvas in the link provided in the assignments
end of day on July 6th . Only pdfs and word documents. I cannot access pages (for those
who use Mac)
◦ SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
For this assignment you are going to work with at least 2 social identity categories. One of them is
gender, you can pick one of the following identities for your second social identity. You can always use
more identities but are not required to do so. Pick one (in addition to Gender)
◦ Race
◦ Social class
◦ Age
◦ Ability
◦ Sexuality
Now answer the following questions:
1. How do you define your gender identity? (10 points)
2. How do you define the second social identity you have chosen? ( eg if its race,
how do you define your race). (10 points)
3. Provide 2 specific instances where your gender identity was communicated to
you and helped you form expectations of how to enact your gender? Be specific
and vivid about that incident? Explain how the incident defined gender
expectations for you?(40 points, *20 for each incident)
4. Specifically identify and explain at least 4 social , economic and/or cultural
factors that have contributed to your gender identity? Be specific as to what
these factors are and explain how they have influenced the construction of your
gender identity? (5 points for each factor, 20 points)
5. Does your gender identity place you in a advantaged or disadvantaged position
in your society? Explain, give reasons why you are in an advantaged or
disadvantaged position and with respect to who? (10 points)
6. Describe a scenario, be as vivid as you can, where you realized your advantage
or disadvantage with respect to your gender identity? (5 points)
7. Now, taking an intersectional approach, analyze your gender identity and the
second identity you have chosen and comment on whether your identities place
you in a structurally advantageous or disadvantageous position. Explain , give
reasons why you are in an advantaged or disadvantaged position and with
respect to who? (20 points)
8. Describe a scenario, be as vivid as you can, where you realized your advantage
or disadvantage with respect you your intersectional (gender and the second
identity you chose) identity? (5 points)
