Now that you’ve had the opportunity to examine general understandings of morality, ethics, and action, it’s important that we delve a little more deeply into the two primary ethical perspectives that will inform our work this quarter – the deontological/formalist perspective and the teleological/utilitarian perspective.
This week’s readings begin our examination of these perspectives, so it’s important that you fully grasp/understand the nature and application of each — you will be applying these two primary perspectives to a variety of CJ issues and practices throughout the quarter, and they will be prominent parts of your assignments. I realize that these ethical perspectives can seem a little confusing/abstract, so I encourage you to really take your time to understand them and the ways in which they inform behaviors/professional codes of ethics.
To delve more deeply into our discussion of the dominant ethical perspectives and criminal justice work, please:
1) Read these two explanations of the relationship between ethical perspectives and criminal justice practice.
READING ONE: Cheeseman – Download Cheeseman –Theory Behind the Practice Download Theory Behind the Practice.
Cheeseman, Cheeseman, K., San Miguel, C., Frantzen, D. & Nored, L. (2015). Everyday ethics for the criminal justice professional. Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press.
READING TWO: Gold – Download Gold –Utilitarian and Deontological Approaches Download Utilitarian and Deontological Approaches.

The second (Gold) reading is especially useful for clarifying the applications of these perspectives.
2) Review the PowerPoint on Ethics and Criminal Justice Download PowerPoint on Ethics and Criminal Justice
NOTE: The PowerPoints I post here are simply an effort to provide a little visual stimulation/accompaniment to the topics–they are not meant to be comprehensive explanations.
3) Watch the following (short) videos
These videos will prove extremely useful for helping you identify the differences between Ethical formalism (deontological) and Utilitarian (teleological) ethics (don’t worry, these videos AREN’T me talking–they’re WAY more fun and they’re illustrated!)
Kantian Ethics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bIys6JoEDw)
Utilitarianism (https://youtu.be/-a739VjqdSI)
4) After reviewing the materials, post a brief reflection in which you address the questions below.
Make sure that your reflection post cites AT LEAST ONE of this week’s assigned readings,
In your reflection, you will first get a little practice applying the ethical perspectives to real-life dilemmas/issues….There are a total of three questions you’ll be answering in your initial post here.
QUESTION ONE: First, using a DEONTOLOGICAL/FORMALIST perspective, answer ONE of the following questions. Be sure to indicate the letter of the question you’re answering and to FULLY explain your reasoning.
