ENG 112 ASSIGNMENT: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS
ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW:
This assignment is meant to pick up where most of you left off in ENG 111, so many of the concepts will sound familiar. The focus of ENG 112, however, has more to do with learning how to identify and adapt your use of various elements of rhetoric in order to accomplish various writing goals. Therefore, this assignment requires you to complete a Comparative Analysis. This assignment will require you to identify certain rhetorical elements specific to one writing task and compare/contrast them with the rhetorical elements specific to a similar writing task with a different purpose.
Your job will be to analyze why each author chose (because all writing is a series of deliberate choices) the specific rhetorical elements he/she chose based on his/her writing situation, most specifically, his/her purpose, genre, and audience.
****You will complete an MLA-formatted analysis following the guidelines outlined below. Your final analysis should be 4-6 pages, not counting the Works Cited page. ******
ASSIGNMENT RHETORICAL SITUATION:
Your specific purpose for this assignment is to demonstrate through analysis a deep understanding of how and why certain authors use the rhetoric they do in order to convey a set of ideas to a specific audience.
Your audience for this writing task is other academics, like your classmates, who are familiar with rhetoric and its many uses and applications but who may not be familiar with the texts you are analyzing. You may find it necessary, therefore, to summarize aspects of your chosen texts, but you should not feel compelled to “lecture” your reader regarding rhetorical definitions and ideas.
Your job is to demonstrate both HOW and WHY the author chose to use the rhetorical tools he/she chose to use and to what effect he/she used them.
You will include a Works Cited page for this assignment that will include entries for the two texts you have chosen from these assignment guidelines below, plus any outside sources you use to complete your essay.
ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES: THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
To begin this assignment, you will choose one of the four text pairings from the list below. Each pairing consists of an essay from our textbook, TS/IS, and an article from a scholarly journal. The scholarly journal articles can be found in the library (Durham Tech Library Search Page).
The texts in each pairing are making a similar argument on the same topic; however, how each text accomplishes the goals of that argument vary greatly. Your purpose with this assignment is to demonstrate a deep understanding of the rhetorical decisions each author makes in achieving his/her argumentative goals given his/her rhetorical situation by contrasting one author’s set of rhetorical choices with the other author’s set of rhetorical choices.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OUTLINE:
• Introduction (follows the paper’s title, which is centered at the top of the page).
Your Introduction for this assignment should introduce the reader to your chosen texts by title and by author(s). Since your reader may not have chosen these same texts, you should also offer a brief global summary of both texts. A global summary summarizes the text from beginning to end, only highlighting the key ideas. A global summary of the TS/IS essays should be easy, as they are short; however, the scholarly journal articles are long and cumbersome to read. Use the organizational headings of the article to help you identify the key ideas of such long articles.
Your Introduction must also establish the rhetorical situation for each text. You should not feel compelled to explain to your readers what a rhetorical situation is and how it impacts the rhetorical decisions of the authors; however, it is fair to assume your reader has not spent as much time thinking about the rhetorical situations of your texts and will, therefore, need the situations established and explained.
Your Introduction should end with a thesis statement that sets up the analysis of each text’s use of rhetoric. It will be helpful to your reader if you identify which specific rhetorical elements will be the focus of your analysis body. Use the template below to help you visualize a thesis statement appropriate for this assignment:
• Comparative Analysis Body – for this section, you will choose at least 3 of the rhetorical elements below.
• Exigence: the reason the text was written. Questions to consider include:
• Genre: the form and features of the text. Question to consider include:
How does the genre of the text impact how and where the text is presented?
• Author/Encoder: information about the author and his/her/their credentials and credibility. Questions to consider include:
• Subject: what the text is about and how it is delineated. Questions to consider include:
What is the argument being made?
• Ethos: the trustworthiness of the author. Questions to consider include:
What do you know about the author that would impact your interpretation of the argument being presented (background, biases, credentials, etc.)?
• Pathos: the emotional appeals used to engage the audience. Questions to consider include:
Are there emotional appeals present in the text? What emotions are appealed to and why
• Conclusion
Conclude your paper with a description of what you’ve learned through your analysis. Questions to consider include:
• What have you learned about rhetoric and how different styles are used by professionals in different fields to accomplish similar goals?
• What have you learned about writing in your own discipline/major?
• How important is it to consider the rhetorical situation and the exigence of a writing task? Why?
• What elements of the rhetorical situation stand out to you now that you’ve deeply analyzed them? Why?
• What about writing surprised you while you were working on this assignment?
• Do you feel the authors made good decisions regarding rhetoric given their different rhetorical situations and exigence? Why or why not?
• How might you approach your next writing task differently now that you have a better understanding of rhetoric, rhetorical situations, and exigence?
